The Simple Crossbody Phone Pouch
Simple Crossbody Phone Pouch with Anne
Price includes all the materials to make one pouch during class. Participants will receive exclusive templates to make more pouches at home. The pattern provided in this class is a special-edition exclusive for the Sewcial Creatives store. It is not currently available for sale at this time.
In this class you will come away with a simple but stylish and professional-looking, cross-body-phone pouch. It is designed to carry up to a standard-to-larger-sized mobile phone. It is not only attractive but utilitarian. This pouch will conveniently put your phone readily accessible at your side. No more having to reach into your purse. Once you make one, you’ll likely want to make more of these to match different outfits or give as gifts!
This is an "adventurous-beginner bag-making” class. Bag-Making skills used to make this item will include narrow topstitching, using adhesives, installation of basic hardware and sewing around it. (e.g. Lobster Clasp, D-Ring, rivets, and a snap). Our Intro. to Bag Making lecture is highly recommended before taking this class. You can register here.
This class is being taught by Anne Benvenuto of Simple Artful Stuff. Anne is an experienced bagmaker, advanced leather-crafter, and pattern designer of accessories and small bags. Anne’s teaching style is “skills-based” versus project-oriented. She hopes you will come away with added confidence, enhanced skill, and new tips and tricks that are transferrable for other bag-making projects.
The class will use thin non-woven materials that are domestic-machine friendly that can be sewn on a typical mid-level machine. The pouch is raw-edge and unlined. However, a brief discussion will cover both adding a lining and/or using thicker materials.
Hardware installation tools will be available for shared use in class. While the class will incorporate a simple ½” nylon web crossbody strap (non-adjustable), other strap-method alternatives will be shown and briefly explained so you can try those yourself at home.
Materials provided by Sewcial Creatives:
• 1x 12.5mm Spring Snap
• 2x 6mm Rivets (D-Ring tab)
• 2x 8mm Rivets (Strap)
• 2x ½” D-Rings
• 2x ½” Lobster Swivel Hooks
• Main body vinyl and contrast fabric for pockets
• 1x ½’ wide Nylon Webbing 50 inches in length.
Note: We will be using narrow webbing for the class. However this strap can also be made using 1-1/2” Nylon webbing with a 1-1/2 Swivel Lobster clasp and additional rivets. Strap options will be discussed in class.
Supplies to bring:
• Standard Domestic Sewing Machine & It’s Manual (Machine in full working order.)
Note: Prior to class look in your machine manual or online to determine the thickest thread your machine will run thru the top and the largest size needle it will accept. (See note below about needle/thread.)
• Narrow Presser Foot
If you do not have a narrow foot, bring your zipper foott. Some zipper feet may work if the full foot width is narrow, and not just the center/needle area of the zipper foot. The full foot must clear the hardware used on the bag.)
• Seam Guide (or etched plate) for sewing 1/8” and 3/8” seam allowances
(If your machine does not have an etched plate or seam guide, narrow masking tape (1/2-3/4” wide) can be used.)
• Heavy-Duty Thread: we recommend Mettler Xtreme Pro 100% Polyester Bonded available at Sewcial Creatives.
•Topstitch needle 90/14 or 100/16 depending on your thread and machine
Additional tools:
• Fabric Awl (important to clean up holes and align hardware)
• Narrow 3mm DST (to minimize needle gumming as 3mm is narrower than 1/8”)
• Wider ¼ or ½” DST (to secure folds and hardware tabs)
• Fabri-Tac Vinyl Glue (Not be past expiration and able to easily squeeze out small drops.)
• Small/narrow glue stick (ideally plastic)
• 6-12” Long Acrylic Ruler (must include 3/8” marking)
• Silver marking Pen (optional but helpful)
• Reg pen that will mark back of fabric (Depending on color of non-woven backing, you may need white/yellow chalk pen (e.g. Carmel Tailors Pencil)
• Sharp Scissors (to trim nylon webbing)
• Embroidery Snips (to closely trim pulled-to-back thread tails (e.g. EZ Snip, Havel’s, etc)
• Thread Burner (for close thread sealing)
• Cigarette Lighter (for sealing nylon webbing)
• Small alcohol pads (regular swiping of DST needle gum)
• 2.5mm circular hole punch (Bring your own to avoid delay of shared use)
