Use the foam pad to hold the spool and make the thread run into your machine correctly. This will prevent damage to the machine by creating a smooth entry to the machine. Without this pad, additional tension could be applied prior to the thread entering the machine. This causes poor stitching and potential damage to the machine itself over time. This disk/cap is 1.7 inches wide, fitting many medium and large sized spools.
